University Extension Dean (1.0 FTE)

The recruitment is open to all applicants.

The Dean of University Extension oversees the academic, fiscal, administrative, programmatic, and strategic operation of University Extension (UNEX). UNEX offers certificates, credentials, and non-credit programs that result in more than 31,000 enrollments per year, in classroom-based and online courses. UNEX also provides academic, cultural, and residential programs for approximately 4,000 visiting international students from more than 40 countries each year. The Dean is responsible for the strategic and financial planning of a self-supporting budget, leadership and human resource management of 165 FTE academic and staff personnel, as well as over 800 part-time instructors.  The Dean manages a 123,000 square foot facility that accommodates classrooms, staff offices, computer labs, a business center, conference-and-special-events facilities, a 47-room guest residence center, and dining services. The Dean reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor and collaborates with the Deans of UCR’s schools and colleges and with UCR Vice Chancellors.

UNEX serves a diverse range of stakeholders, and the UNEX Dean is responsible for the community partnerships, continuing education services, and workforce development that support our local area while also overseeing relationships and programming for UCR’s growing community of international students.

This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position.

75% Leadership

The Dean will:

  • Provide academic and administrative vision and leadership for UNEX and oversee all aspects of the teaching and public service missions.
  • Continue to raise the national and international profile of UNEX in significant and measurable ways.
  • Lead academic planning and implementation in UNEX, ensuring coordination with the overall campus academic plan and attainment of relevant accrediting standards.
  • Provide campus-wide leadership in continuing education and lifelong learning for degree and non-degree, part-time and executive academic programs.
  • Enhance the diversity of the faculty, staff and student body of UNEX and promote a healthy and inclusive campus climate.
  • Promote public service programs that strengthen campus partnerships in the community and enhance the University’s service to the region.
  • Increase UNEX revenue through student enrollments, new program development, partnerships, grants, contracts, and corporate funding.
  • Serve as the chief fundraiser of a self-sustaining unit and focal point for all external relations (e.g., community, industry, media, government) on behalf of UNEX, in coordination with the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement.
  • Serve as a member of the campus leadership team, and advise the Provost and Chancellor on a wide range of issues related to the University’s operation.
  • Foster entrepreneurship and continue to help UCR serve as a growth engine for Inland Southern California.
  • Provide oversight for the Executive Director of the UCR Palm Desert Center.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state laws and system-wide and campus policies, including Academic Senate regulations and affirmative action policies.
  • Represent UNEX and participate in internal campus-wide policy and program discussions.
  • Handle sensitive issues with diplomacy, tact and confidentiality.

25% Programming and Organizational Change 

The Dean will, with respect to UNEX:

  • Oversee student affairs, including academic advising, student well-being, and special initiatives, to promote student success and satisfaction.
  • Support the procurement of external grants and the successful execution of externally funded projects.
  • Manage personnel actions (e.g. appointment, retention, merit, promotion) for UNEX administrative, program planning staff and teaching faculty. Establish and maintain high morale in the workforce.
  • Serve as chief advocate and innovative change leader for the organization.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Senate to achieve innovative curricular changes that promote student success and satisfaction.
  • Work collaboratively with deans, vice provosts, and other campus leaders to implement curricular and organizational innovations.
Required Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Competencies
  • Earned doctorate.
  • A record of increasing responsibility and success in leadership and administration.
  • Significant experience in the field of continuing education.
  • Demonstrated success in developing relationships between continuing education and other academic units, administrators, businesses and community organizations.
  • Experience leading a major unit in a university or relevant organization; for example, as a dean, associate dean, department chair, or unit director.
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated acumen in budgetary and financial affairs.
  • Experience developing successful partnerships and garnering external funding.
  • Demonstrated or potential for success in external engagement and fundraising.
  • Commitment to and experience in promoting diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated experience in translating strategic plans into programmatic achievements.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a leadership team.
  • Ability to proactively identify and resolve organizational challenges.
  • An understanding of technology-enhanced pedagogy for improved student learning and success.
